Roger is uniquely qualified to understand the convergence of Landscape and Forestry. On leaving school he spent a year in Norway working as a lumberjack and attending forestry school. On returning to the UK he worked for two years in Thetford Forest before gaining a National Diploma in Forestry [Distinction] at Newton Rigg and then went on to study Landscape Design in Manchester gaining a BA(Hons) degree [ 1st Class] and Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture [Distinction].
For two years Roger honed his skills as a Graduate Landscape Architect in private practice, before starting his career with the Forestry Commission, gaining Chartered status as both a Landscape Architect and Forester at the outset.
During his 28 years with the Forestry Commission Roger worked for FC Forest Services on policy, forest landscape training and supporting grant applicants; and with Forestry England on forest planning, recreation site masterplanning and urban fringe woodland creation.

‘The illustrations that Roger has produced for B&C: Nature’s Estate are excellent. I was sceptical that any illustrations could be an asset to delicate negotiations with farm tenants, as well as a useful tool for the general community, but the finished product both tells a clear and accessible story, as well as painting a subtle and nuanced picture for those who manage the land. We are so pleased with the result, which is both very useful to the project, as well as a beautiful series of portraits of the landscape and our vision.
Working with Roger was a very enjoyable and smooth process and he was brilliantly flexible, working around our very full schedule. He was great at understanding our specific vision, responding to feedback, and creating an illustration that reflects all the elements we want to convey. Thank you!’
Roger is a keen cyclist and also loves adventures, one of which saw him doing a solo cycle trip to the North Cape of Norway thus bringing together two of his great loves, Norway and cycling! It helped that he’s fairly fluent in Norwegian. He also enjoys windsurfing and being in East Devon lives in a place where the sea and moors are both easily accessible.
Being a good citizen is important to Roger; he has had roles as a school governor and as a trustee, he regularly volunteers with a local homelessness project and has recently been involved with a school building project in Kenya.
Plan Vision is a supporter of Surfers Against Sewage, Sustrans & the Woodland Trust.
